Reviewing your pension

Guaranteed Minimum Pension (GMP) is usually only a small part of a pension that some members built up between 6 April 1978 and 5 April 1997. In the past, men and women received their State Pensions at different ages. GMP is based on part of the State Pension, so the amount of GMP built up by men and women could be different.

Why we’re reviewing GMP

In 2018, the High Court ruled that pension schemes in the UK could not pay different pensions to men and women as a result of differences based on GMP. This ruling only applied to GMP built up between 17 May 1990 and 5 April 1997.

This means we had to review any GMP and any pension payable to members who built up GMP during this period. The amount of GMP a member built up may have been different if they were the opposite sex. For some members, this means they’re due a slightly higher pension.

As part of this review, we’re also converting members’ GMP into ‘normal’ (non-GMP) pension. See an example of how conversion works.

If you’re affected and you’re already getting your Manweb Group pension

We’re checking how much pension you would have built up if you were the opposite sex. This tells us whether we need to increase your overall pension.

If you are due an increase, it’s likely to be small. Depending on the kind of increase you’re due, we might also pay you a one-off back payment for any extra pension you should have got in the past.

Phase 1 members

We wrote to phase 1 members in September 2025. We explained how much your pension will change and whether you are due a back payment, and that this will happen in February 2026.

Phase 2 members

Another group of members are in phase 2 of this exercise. They received a different letter in September to explain that their figures aren’t ready yet. This is because this work requires lots of information and resources, so it’s going to happen at different times for different members.

We’ll be in touch with phase 2 members again when their figures are completed, to let them know when their GMP will be converted. We’re aiming to do this in September 2026.

If you’re a phase 1 or a phase 2 member who was expecting a letter but has not received it, please contact our administrator, Aptia.

If you’re affected but not yet taking your
Manweb Group pension

Before you take your pension, we’ll work out how much pension you would have built up if you were the opposite sex. This will show us if we need to increase the overall value of your pension.

As your retirement date approaches, we’ll send you information about taking your benefits which takes into account the change to GMP rules.
